What Box? David Scott's Beautiful New Book
Imagine a coffee table book so engaging that you can't put it down. Suzanne Slesin's marvelous publishing house, Pointed Leaf Press has produced some of our favorites. Each has its own particular style and story, but what they have in common is that they're not casual, brows-y books. Rather, they're smart, beautiful and compelling. Two years ago she published the ridiculously inspiring Matthew White volume The Italy of My Dreams and I'm guessing the Italian tourist board was pretty happy. Now, a great new title on the Pointed Leaf roster does for design what Matthew's book did for Venice - it makes you yearn to be in beautiful rooms. Outside the Box comes from super talented designer and friend-of-Carini-Lang, David Scott.
The title refers to Mr. Scott's approach, which mixes precious antiques with the best of modern design and some some extremely impressive art collections, and it also alludes to elements of inspiration collected in a mitered shadowbox-style tray for each homeowner at the start of the design process. The author illustrates his eloquent chapter openers with these delicious teaser-compositions of texture, color and the odd object, including sculptures of his dogs, an Hermes belt and a tin of caviar in the example shown above. The eleven projects illustrated in the book (with dazzling photography by Antoine Bootz) range from David Scott's own contemporay Manhattan apartment and quintessential Hamptons cottage in Wainscott to a stunning beachfront modern, a desert mansion for serious art collectors and a romantic fieldstone Connecticut Colonial.
The properties run the gamut, which reflects he importance he puts on, as his bio states "embracing the natural connection" of clients to their projects. David Scott has given these homeowners luxurious, personal, chic spaces in which to pursue their dreams. No wonder we've been seeing his rooms in top showhouses, his designs in top publications and his name popping up on those "top 50" lists lately.
It is very thrilling to see the ways in which David has used Carini Lang carpets in so many of his projects. He and Joe have worked on so many gorgeous custom carpets together and it is a treat for us to see them in the final designs. These are the kind of thoughtful, elegant interiors in which every great design firm wants to see their work show up, and we're just delighted to be among David Scott's go-to sources.
